“Every person must live the inner life in one form or another. Consciously or unconsciously, voluntarily or involuntarily, the inner world will claim us and exact its dues. If we go to that realm consciously, it is by our inner work.
If we try to ignore our inner world, as most of us do, the unconscious will find its way into our lives through pathology: our psychosomatic symptoms, compulsions, depressions and neurosis. When we don’t go to spirit, the spirit comes to us as neurosis.”
-Robert A. Johnson - Jungian Psychologist
Sometimes without even knowing it, we express ourselves to others, the things we have experienced in the past. Sometimes these things we unconsciously express to others are good and sometimes they are not so good. Using art can make the unconscious become conscious as we put down how we feel in a visible form.
Try for yourself! Try with someone else! It could be fun and playful if you like! If you are up to talking about what you have put in art form, you can do so, but to be silent is equally as good, as art does not require verbal output all the time.
A Can of Worms
Black Issues in the Therapeutic ProcessFive one-day SEMINAR EVENTS at The Stephen Lawrence Centre, London SE8 4HU
28th April through to 30th June 2012Hello
These seminars are designed for therapists, therapy institutions that provide therapy training and anyone who wants a greater understanding of black issues in the therapeutic process.
This is the Third, in this series of 5, Can of Worms Seminars which will look at ‘The Black Western Archetype’, a way of recognising the evolution of stereotypes and their impact on unconscious processes.
Notes and details for the whole series of seminars are available at:http://www.baatn.org.uk/CanOfWorms
There are important concepts and ideas in these seminars which have put into words what I knew in my body and emotional life and helped me find my voice around these issues. I believe that these concepts have the potential to change the landscape of mainstream psychological discourse.

We are looking for fathers and mothers who have experienced the mother’s post-natal depression - to sit an Advisory Group for the above project, which will study the impact of engaging with the partners of women who become depressed before or after the birth of their babies. Specifically we need:
• a UK-based mother who has experienced pre/post natal depression
• a UK based father whose partner was depressed
• if you have a science/academic background, that would be VERY desirable!Participants do NOT need to be a couple (indeed, SHOULD not be) so we are looking to hear from INDIVIDUALS resident anywhere in the UK. Commitment required will be to read/comment on papers and participate in up to four ‘virtual’ advisory group meetings (held via conference calls) over a two-year period. Please email Adrienne Burgess or call her on 07747145146.
Fathers’ depression: University of Exeter
Are you the father of a child aged 3-5 years? Have you suffered from depression or low mood at any time in your life? The University of Exeter would like your help in an important new study looking at fathers’ well-being and their role in their family. You can help by filling out a short online survey here.Fathers who agree to take part in the follow-up study and live in Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, Avon and London will then be contacted for a home visit where they will take part in some play tasks with their child and be interviewed. All information collected will be kept strictly confidential and stored securely. Please email Abby Higgins or call her on 01392 725019.
Work-family balance: University of Manchester
The University of Manchester is looking for fathers to participate in research into the challenges of balancing fatherhood and work. While many employers support women in balancing their work and family roles, others report that workplaces are not very flexible when fathers want to be more involved in their families. In exploring this issue, we want to hear from fathers about their experiences – good and bad.If you or someone you know is a father with a child under the age of thirteen then we invite you to participate in a confidential interview. The next round of interviews will take place between June and August 2012. Interviews will last about an hour - scheduled around participants’ convenience and location. Please email Dr Gwen Daverth or call her on 0794 881 3925.
Celebrating black fathers: The Nublack
More Than XY is an exhibition scheduled for June/July this year (around Father’s Day) and organised by Thenublack to celebrate black fathers through photography and illustration. The exhibition will take place in three locations in Brooklyn, New York and London with 10-12 pieces of work displayed in each location. It will focus on five key elements of fatherhood: Passion, Reconciliation, Identity, Storytelling, and Cycles of Life. A blank space at the exhibition will enable members of the public to write messages and post their own father-photos. Ideally, celebrity fathers will take part in a children’s Storytime Corner to read a children’s story.Exciting London venues have already offered exhibition space at low cost. For a sponsorship fee of around £1,500, Thenublack is looking for brands/organisations to sponsor (and co-brand) the exhibition. In addition to the offered exposure, Thenublack can provide access to a fascinating demographic of fathers, youth and the creative arts through its extensive, groundbreaking existing work. Please email Gabrielle Smith or call her on 07904 393 431.

We are seeking innovative ideas for an artwork, art project, exhibition or online/digital work responding to the theme of “success” to be presented during AND festival in Manchester from 29 August - 2 September 2012.
This year AND sets out to explore the spectrum of “success” through looking at those who have claimed “failure” to offer more imaginative, co-operative, and insightful ways of being in the world.
We are seeking proposals responding to this theme to animate the spaces surrounding the AND Festival hub at Cornerhouse, such as public spaces, empty spaces, digital spaces and local businesses that stretch down Whitworth Street to the First Street Development and up the Oxford Road to the Universities.
This collaboration provides a unique opportunity for participants from across the UK to submit a proposal costing between £50 - £500.
